When you are considering renovating your kitchen, there are an overwhelming variety of finishes to choose from. One of them is PVC wrap, lately also manufactured in the trending super satin touches.
Wrap doors are high quality doors manufactured from medium density fibre board (MDF or commonly known as Supawood), vacuum bonded with PVC foil in various colours and textures. This provides a continuous, impervious coating that is hygienic, long lasting and easy to clean.
The MDF panel is cut, routed and profiled as desired and provides a door for everyone’s taste. A wrap door can be designed to a number of profiles, from simple flat doors to doors with more traditional routed patterns. The foil comes in a large range of colours including solid and wood grain colours and the finish can be smooth, textured or even gloss.
When compared to spray/duco doors, PVC wrap has the following benefits:
No glue line on the edges as with melamine doors that are edged. Therefore a cleaner and smoother end result is produced.
PVC wrap is price competitive when compared to spray doors.
PVC wrap can be manufactured with profiles and textures, whereas spray/duco only allows for profiles with a smooth finish.
The best results regarding the manufacturing process are proven on a high pressure press bed, compared to a standard vacuum press. Make sure that when you choose a manufacturer that you understand their processes and what type of equipment they are using.
A great benefit when manufacturing PVC wrap components is the fact that the colour options are endless. With the latest interior trends of warmer and darker tones we are experiencing a shift towards matt and satin touch PVC wrap finishes which complement these colours. These are all available at Simply Cabinet Doors.
Simply Cabinet Doors has been manufacturing wrap doors over the last 10 years. We have established strong supplier relationships that have been part of the developing technology in PVC foils. We market the product with confidence in partnership with our suppliers.

A gloss finish was and still is one of the more popular choices when it comes to kitchens. It gives a clean and hygienic atmosphere which creates space. White high gloss is always a good starting point when the iconic two tone kitchen is desired.
Combining materials, textures and finishes.
Another new trend was the super satin matte finishes combined with natural colours and textured designs.
The movement is also to use three or four colour combinations with added textures. Darker colours incorporated as accents were also seen in many designs and greatly increases the dynamic of the overall designs.

The flow and layout of a design is also becoming very important. We see the focus being on lifestyle kitchens that is not only functional but makes a statement and reflects the personality of the home owner.
Themes like recycling, green concepts and natural materials are combined with metals and steel in order to create a very interesting design concept, again a reflection of character.
Certain finishes can add a great deal of sophistication when it comes to the overall look of a living space.

We recently finished PVC wrap components for one of our clients that is building a new kitchen. The client had a very specific look that he wanted to achieve, looking at the international market trends of blending natural materials, such as solid wood, with modern surface technologies in this case the FENIX NTM compact laminate tops.
They wanted something different, yet subtle and sophisticated. The great thing about our component manufacturing process is that there are large amounts of different decors, finishes and textures to choose from. This means that whatever the client decides on that he will be able to compliment the look of his new living space with the exact type of finish that he is looking for.
Handle less functionality means that the owner wanted a sleek appearance. In order to create this touch to open hardware is used. If a sleek appearance is desired another method can be used by making use of our finger grip profile doors that eliminates the need for any door handles. Creating a sleek clean look that does not sacrifice functionality.
Black PVC wrap is combined with natural wood and FENIX NTM compact laminate tops with its matt anti-fingerprint properties. This creates a modern look that blends perfectly with the international trends of combining a various amount of textures and colours.
Tops are cut out to accommodate appliances as well as sinks. Making use of the CNC machine with diamond cutters the correct sizes are machined into the top before installation. This ensures a perfect fit and no need to cut any holes on site. The CNC also ensures that the compact laminate is cut cleanly with a perfect finish.

A complete kitchen making use of compact laminate. One of our clients recently finished this very unique project for a client. Making use of compact laminate as the material of choice he created this unique kitchen.
What is compact laminate?
Compact laminate is made up of layers of Kraft paper that is dipped in resin and then dried. The layers are then pressed together between laminated top and bottom sheets and baked. This bonds everything together creating a material that is solid and a very durable tough laminate.
This means that the material is extremely tough and resilient and will stand up to heavy use. It is also a very decorative material in having a textured finish.
This unique project saw the extensive use of compact laminate to create a modern yet practical look. This was used as both counter top material as well as being the doors on the cabinets.
Color Magma is used combined with white to give a contrasting look. Using the CNC machine and diamond tooling the basin and stove top were recessed to give a clean sleek look.

High gloss seems to be a favourite in kitchen finishes in the past year or so. The demand for a quality high gloss finish is still high and we are frequently producing these components. Reason why the high gloss seems to be a finish that people prefer, as it offers a look that is adaptable to a multitude of designs, styles and create an atmosphere.
There are a host of different options when it comes to a high gloss finish. These all are produced making use of various materials as well as manufacturing processes. Some have benefits over others as well as cost implications.
Duco is a painting process where layers and layers are painted in order to create a even finish with a high gloss. Advantage of this method is that you can have a door with a profile in it and have the high gloss finish. Disadvantages is that the finish might chip as general wear and tear sets in. If you were to do add on’s at a later stage it is very hard to match the color with previous finish.
Wrapped Doors
PVC wrapped doors is a MDF board wrapped by means of pressure and heat in order to create a door enclosed in a PVC foil. The advantage of this method is that with means of a high pressure press you can achieve a high definition finish. More resistant to moisture and quite hard wearing. Disadvantages are that you can’t achieve high pressure wrapped profile doors and only flat panels.
Melamine Doors
Melamine high gloss is a normal melamine board with a high gloss finish. These boards come from the manufacturer in various colors to choose from. They offer a great high gloss finish with good reflective qualities. However, one disadvantage that they seem to have is when it is edged it has a glue line. This might affect the clean look that is being strived for.
Overall all the production methods will provide you with a high gloss finish, it simply comes down to the person on how glossy he or she wants the end product to be. Some finishes lend themselves to providing higher definition high gloss finish than others. If you have any questions to the different types of finishes and how they might suit your needs please feel free to contact me.
There has been this perception that I have come across a few times that people believe postform tops are on the way out. Running a factory manufacturing postform tops I can in all honesty say that this is not the case. Postform tops are still in demand today and the demand won’t stop any time soon. The tops are of high quality, priced well and with the host of different colors available today it is hard not to find something that you like.
Durability
I get asked quite a lot what the durability is like from postform tops. A solid top might be perceived as being more durable but a laminate counter top can take a fair amount of abuse. If you look after your counter top it is not unheard of for it to last up to 20 years. They handle mild heat well and stains, impacts and abrasions have little damage effect on them.
Variety of colors
The hardest part of choosing a top would be the color. You are truly spoilt for choice in this regard. There are so many different variations that sometimes it might be overwhelming. I normally urge people to come with at least an idea of whether they want a light or dark color, and if it should be solid color or some sort of texture and whether it is a wood grain, stone range or something similar. We stock color ranges from over 4 different suppliers all having offerings that should fit your needs.
Different sizes
The general idea from the market is that there are set sizes that tops are manufactured to. Many people design kitchens or living areas around these dimensions. However when we manufacture postform tops we can produce almost any size. Our manufacturing process is not limited to “industry standard” sizes and any size you need we can produce. Our factory is also one of the only that is able to produce a top up to 4.1m in length.
Edge Profile
When looking at the edges of the tops there are 4 profiles to choose from. We manufacture tops with 90 degree edges, 180 degrees, 8mm square line and 6mm square line. The edge profile depends on the specific look that you would want or if you have an existing counter top that needs to be replaced we can manufacture the edge profile so that it fits in with the existing counter top.
Manufacturing Time
Generally, postform tops can be manufactured from scratch in quite a short period of time. Depending whether the laminates needs to be ordered it and a few other various factors. You can expect a top to be completed in 3-4 working days and sometimes faster.
Price
Probably one of the reasons why postform tops, in my opinion, are still here to stay for quite a while. A postform top is more than a third cheaper than stone, and the money that is saved there can be spend on other aspects of re-doing your kitchen. It is truly still value for your money.
If you have any questions with regards to tops or manufacturing thereof and require some technical details or have inquiries please feel free to give me a call. For more info on our services and products have a look at our website www.top-worx.co.za . You can also follow us on Facebook for updates.
